Mask Project Slides

2D to 3D Mask Project!

Project Goals:

  1. To explore digital painting techniques
  2. Examine identity: What elements/aspects of ourselves can we express through a digital medium? What can masks do?
  3. Translate 2D digital art into a 3D object

  1. STEP 1
    Painting with Illustrator
    Exploring Digital Painting

    By Nicolas Monin-Baroille

    STEP 2

    Let’s Explore!
    1. Take some time to experiment with the brushes and techniques!
    2. Post 2-3 examples to your blog, noting the brushes/techniques used (this will help you in creating the next stage of your project).

    STEP
    Exploring Identity

    Masks

For Example: Greek Theatre Masks expressed different emotions in plays.

    STEP 4
    Let’s Discuss! (5 mins)
    1. In your groups that I’ve assigned, discuss the following:
      1. What is Identity?
      2. What can masks express (or challenge) about identity?
      3. What can masks do or represent?

Now let’s share! Card Call out “Rules:”
    • You can share you thoughts or your partner’s.
    • You can “Pass” if you don’t want to share.
    • You can “Call a Friend” and your partner can share.

      STEP 5
      Exploring Identity

      Abstract Expressionism

      WHAT IS ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM?
      • Abstract Expressionism is an artistic movement that conveys attitudes and emotions through nontraditional and usually nonrepresentational means.
      • Also known as Action Painting. This is because the emotions of the artist are not only conveyed by the use of the medium, but also in the movements and actions of the artist in using the medium.
      • Abstract Expressionism is spontaneous! Don’t overthink it!
      • Are there artists that come to mind when thinking about Abstract Expressionism?
      Examples:

      By Willem de Kooning
      By Leo Tolstoy

STEP 6: Creating your SELF PORTRAIT

      BRAINSTORM YOUR IDEAS!
      • Make a blog post answering the following questions.
      • Add inspiration images if you like!
      WHAT TO CONSIDER?
      • Your goal is to create an Abstract Self Portrait, that is nonrepresentational. Take inspiration from Abstract Impressionism!
      • What colours represent me?
      • What elements (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture, tone, value) and/or principles (balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement, pattern, repetition, rhythm, unity) of design convey ideas and concepts surrounding my identity?
      • What do I think about masks? What can they represent or say about me?
      • How will I combine my ideas about masks with digital abstract expressionism?

STEP 7: BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!                                LITERALLY……..

Begin to translate some of your ideas from the brainstorm

      2D ABSTRACT SELF PORTRAIT CRITERIA
      • Your digital art must fill the entire page!
      • Your design should incorporate elements that represent aspects of your identity.
      • There should be thorough exploration of various techniques in painting with Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
      • Record you process by posting your "work in progress" to your blog by the end of each class.

HAVE FUN WITH THIS! EXPLORE AND EXPERIMENT!
